How to Perform a Garage Door Tune Up

1. Turn the Power Off
Automatic garage doors can be hazardous.
They can unexpectedly open or close, trapping objects or body parts. This is especially the case if they’re faulty. That’s why it’s essential that you make sure they’re shut off before you start your garage door tune up.

2. Lubricate Rollers, Chains and Springs
If your garage doors are jamming, moving slowly, or making squeaking noises when opening and closing, they need some lubrication.
If your rollers are made of metal, you can give them a quick spray with some WD40. However, if they’re made from rubber or vinyl, this will damage them. For springs, it’s best to use a silicone-based spray, while a lithium grease product should be used for chains.
3. Replace Weatherstripping
Check the weather stripping around the edges of your garage door.
This area is the one of the most vulnerable to wear and tear, so it shouldn’t be overlooked.
If you find that any lengths of stripping are torn, cracked or brittle, they’ll need to be replaced. You can buy replacement weatherstripping at your local hardware store. Just make sure you measure the garage door with a tape measure first, so you know how much you need.
4. Check for Misalignment
The locking bars or chains on garage doors can easily become misaligned. When this happens, the door will have problems opening and closing, as it won’t be able to run smoothly on its track.
If this is the case, don’t worry. It’s an easy fix!
All you have to do is take a screwdriver and loosen the screws on the brackets that house the locking bars. With a hammer, gently tap the bars back into place so that they line up with the slots. Then, simply tighten the screws again.
If your door uses a chain instead of locking bars, you’ll have to use a wrench to loosen the nut that keeps it in place. Then, you can make your adjustments.
5. Inspect Moving Parts
Within the mechanism of a garage door, there are lots of moving parts. Over time, they can become loose, damaged or completely broken.
Carry out a full inspection, looking over all hinges, bolts and other hardware to check for any problems. Some parts may need to be removed and replaced. However, some may simply need a good cleaning.
Remove any dirt, dust or debris with white spirit, and things should be as good as new.
